NY Times Feat: Altering Clothes, and Lives, With Design

Mike Forbes, 27, a classmate of Ms. Scott’s and then a junior, similarly focused on the city’s neediest cases, deciding to design the Ulterior Survival Bag, which transforms into a boot. (The bag’s rubber base becomes the sole of a shoe when turned inside out.) “I saw how many people in Detroit were suffering from frostbite and trench foot, and with a shortage of winter footwear it seemed the right product to try to design,” Mr. Forbes recalled.

Detroit Free Press

Housed in an open and modern renovated space at a 1920s Albert Kahn-designed building on Henry Ford's Detroit campus, the institute includes Henry Ford Medical Group, the College for Creative Studies and Wayne State University's Smart Sensors and Integrated Microsystems Program as partners.

While other innovation institutes exist across the country, Dulchavsky said Henry Ford's is unique because of its ties with the College for Creative Studies. "They don't come in with preconceived ideas," he said.

Fifteen design students from the college spent time scouring Henry Ford operating and emergency rooms, generating ideas such as a chair for surgeons and a cabinet that provides light and aromatherapy, plus plays music — all to help with healing.

He said he was hoping for maybe one idea that had commercial potential. Instead, he got a dozen, four of which have been put on a fast-track for development and possible commercialization.

HALLOWEEN 2010 RHODE ISLAND/BOSTON

Breakfast at julian’s

Julian's is a wonderful place to eat! I highly suggest if your ever in providence you look them up.

One Month Down, 3 to Go

The atmosphere and energy casually climbs and the Dj sets up for his turn to move what turns into a crowd. The place packs to capacity and the once dining room floor is now a dance floor filled with crazyness! Having a blast and plenty of ideas are flowing during my experiences down here in Rhode Island. This entire experience is fueling a future project or direction of mine that has yet to fully reveal itself but I'm confident it will materialize over time as everything else does.

Rediscovering Childhood Imagination

Since I have started at Hasbro and been sketching new products, problem solving, and new ideas it suddenly occurred to me that in the middle of work I was beginning to break BACK into a part of my imagination that I feel so many of us lose as we grow older. Prior to this moment at Hasbro I have been struggling with finding that sweet spot in life and in my work.

The Game Changer

I was driving to pick up a new order of shirts for AnymileClothing.com and received a phone call... On the other end was David Kunitz? Had no idea who he was then he asked if I had accepted a internship for the fall yet and if I liked toys? I said I LOVE TOYS!!! lol....and it was official I would be a Design Co-op for Hasbro Toy inc. in Rhode Island for my senior fall semester.

Anymile Clothing

I now have my own clothing line to use for creative expression both artistically and ideally to make a difference within my community that may relieve local frustrations and problems in Metro Detroit. Learn more about my clothing line at... www.anymileclothing.com ...and help support the movement.

The Trip To Rhode Island

It was at this point I discovered that the air intake hose connected to my innercooler had a hole in it finally answering why the car had been running so poorly even though I had just had $850 in repairs before I left.....click to read more.

Experience the Experience

Someone wanted me doing only creative work…

Blessing In Disguise

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be known for my art, design, and creativity. For the past five years I have struggled to get through school while working  as a server. This past spring I was finishing another semester at school looking forward to enjoying my summer. While grinding in [...]

Body Art/Fashion show

Thursday 7-8-10 was a blast at the Dirty Martini in Novi, Mi. The event was put on by Leo Libra Entertainment who hosted a wonderful event with fashion by Ooche’, music by LEWD Society, body art Mike Forbes and “Tiny” Tim Patton.

Meeting the experts

I had the pleasure to meet the homeless of Detroit at Art and Soul. This is the beggining of my refinement stage of the Survival bag/shoe. I’m learning alot about what the main worries, needs, and problems associated with actually being homeless. The information I am gathering from these true survival experts will be infused into the process and final design.
